Piroska is a lyrical ballad influenced by composer, Michele Kalo's Hungarian heritage. This piece is a wonderful Grade 2.5 piece to teach phrasing, 3/4 time and the beauty of folk-like melodies. The title Piroska comes from the word piros, the Hungarian word for "red," or "little red one." The red color is regarded by the Hungarians as something very beautiful and rich.

Piroska was written for the 2010 New Horizons Music Camp in Chautauqua, NY.

Michele Kalo knew her passion was to teach music in the 7th grade. Fulfilling this passion, Michele has been in public education since 1998, teaching band in grades 5-12 in the Detroit Metropolitan Area for five years and in Arizona since 2003.  She is currently teaching K-6 General Music and Band at Ishikawa Elementary in the Mesa Public Schools District, is an adjunct faculty member Scottsdale Community College and maintains a private high brass studio.  Michele is also an active adjudicator and clinician for ABODA and AMEA.  She most recently served AMEA in 2014 as the North Central High School Regional Band Clinician and as the 7th Grade All State Band Clinician. In 2005, Michele founded a performance-based music education organization called Sonic Arts.  Since its inception, Sonic Arts has expanded to include five different ensembles including Sonic Brass, the flagship ensemble. She recently received the Marquis "Who's Who In America" for her successful outreach work with Sonic Arts. In 2011, Michele became the Music Director of the Scottsdale Concert Band at Scottsdale Community College.  She is only the band’s 3rd conductor since it was founded in 1977. Michele earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Bowling Green State University and completed her Master’s Degree in Music Education from ASU in 2007. Michele is a member of ABODA, AMEA, Association of Concert Bands (ACB), American Composers Forum (ACF), American Society of Composers, Arrangers and Publishers (ASCAP) and the International Horn Society (IHS).  Michele clinics and arranges music for local high schools for both marching and concert bands and always makes time to write for and perform on her Horn with the Salt River Brass.
